EDUCATION & TRAINING

EU development project: Eurasian Land-Bridge & the Witte System: “Silk Routes”

Railways as a tool for trade expansion and economic growth, Witte Research 2015

Eurasian Land Bridge concept presented by Henry C. Carey in the 19th century U.S.A; proposed opening up the American lands from the Atlantic to the Pacific through a railroad connection - the First Transcontinental Railroad, North American Land-Bridge 1860, suggested similar in Europe and Asia.=> the First Eurasian Land-Bridge 1890-1901 from Moscow to Vladivostok – opening up the lands of Siberia for settlement.

The Witte System “railway approach”: The basic plan -> extensive railroad construction would stimulate the growth of the metallurgical and fuel industries supplying rails and other equipment. In turn the expansion of the heavy industries would create favourable conditions for the growth of the light industries. Railroad construction served as the flywheel for the entire economy. The “railway approach” created a demand to build a railway transit system between Europe and Asia, a Land-Bridge, which intended to produce more rapid and cheaper railway communication and become a global means of transit, on which the exchange of goods between West and East would have to flow. The author of the Witte System, Sergei Witte, Minister of Finance (1892-1903) and Prime Minister (1905-06) of pre-revolutionary Russia. Constructed the First Eurasian Land-Bridge “Trans-Siberian Railway” 9 112 km & East Chinese Railway “the New Silk Route” 2 400 km, building the last part of Trans-Siberian Railway straight through Manchuria bringing China into the Eurasian development.
